Aleksander Gierymski (1850-1901) - one of the leading representatives of realism, precursor of impressionism in Polish painting. Gierymski studied painting in Warsaw and Munich. He travelled around Austria and Italy, where he created his first paintings with notions of impressionism. What is interesting is that, at that time, Gierymski had not yet been to Paris, so he was not familiar with Impressionist paintings - these effects in his work resulted solely from an independent process of experimenting with the relationship between colour and light. The most spectacular period of Gierymski’s work was in the years of 1879-1888 spent in Warsaw. At that time he created the Jewess with Oranges, Old Town Gate, Solec Harbour, and other paintings capturing scenes from the life of Powiśle and Old Town’s poor. His work, however, was not appreciated in his native Poland leading to Gierymski’s emigration to Germany, France and finally to Italy, where he died in a psychiatric hospital.
