A woman in a grove

Jacek Malczewski (1854-1929) - painter, illustrator, one of the leading representatives of symbolism in the modernist Young Poland (Art Nouveau). He studied painting under the watchful eye of Jan Matejko in Cracow and in Paris. During that time he also visited Italy, Turkey and Germany. In Malczewski's work one can discover the beauty of the native landscape and the world of the Polish countryside with manor houses featuring elements from Greek and Roman mythology. Raised in an atmosphere of strong love to the country and national messianism, Malczewski expressed these values in symbolic compositions full of allegories of the Polish nation. A separate group of his work is made out of symbolic portraits (Władysław Reymont, Adam Asnyk or Aleksander Wielopolski - “Polish Hamlet”) and self-portraits, in which portrayed characters are usually accompanied by props of symbolic meaning or mythological characters. In historical and allegorical performances, the artist very often portrayed himself as one of the characters in the painting, e.g. in the painting Christ in Emmaus or Tobiah and the Fates.
