Lawrence Alma-Tadema (1836-1912) - Dutch academic painter, from 1870s permanently residing and creating in England, therefore usually included among English painters. He studied painting in Antwerp and then exhibited in Brussels, Antwerp, Amsterdam and Paris. He lived in Brussels temporarily before moving to England in 1870, where he joined the Royal Academy of Arts. One of the most recognised and acclaimed representatives of Victorian painting. Fascinated by the history of ancient Greece and Rome, hence the most common motif in his paintings are the genre scenes embedded in an ancient scenery. The artist often gave them an erotic and idyllic touch by placing them in baths, women’s rooms or secluded corners. He was also a renowned portraitist.
