Woman with a hen
by Julian Fałat
Julian Fałat (1853-1929) - one of the most renowned Polish watercolour painters, a representative of realism and impressionist landscape. He studied, intermittently, in the Cracow School of Fine Arts, Zurich and Munich. In between the studying, he earned some extra money by painting during his travels. His specialisation in watercolours stemmed from the lack of financial resources for the oil paints in the early stage of his artistic education. His talent, however, was independent of technique. Fałat painted mainly landscapes, but also genre scenes, portraits and hunting scenes. Fałat also painted Cracow motifs, such as views of the city walls painted from the windows of the studio at different times of the day. After 1910, when he settled in Bystra, mountain landscapes became a permanent feature of his artwork. After Poland’s independence, Fałat actively participated in the rebuilding of Polish cultural life.
