Józef Chełmoński (1849-1914) - one of the greatest artist of Polish realistic painting. He studied painting in Warsaw and Munich. Chełmoński could be considered a hipster of the time given his controversial apparel: he could be wearing red tights of a Russian calvary, a navy blue Ulaan jacket and a conductor cap of the Warsaw-Vienna Railway. Just like the other great painters of Polish modernism he travelled extensively in France, Italy and Germany, which had a significant influence on his work. Chełmoński was friends with Wojciech Garson and Władysław Ślewiński. He painted mostly genre scenes revealing the true colours of Polish countryside and mastered the art of painting galloping horses.
